"The New Edifice to be Formally Dedicated Tomorrow Afternoon." Petaluma Courier 26 Feb. 1898. The new Methodist Episcopal church just completed at Penn's Grove will be formally dedicated to God on Sunday afternoon at 2:15, and great preparations have been made by the pastor, Rev. Thomas A. Atkinson of the local M. E. church, who will be in charge of the new church in addition to his local pastorate. The dedicatory sermon will be preached by Rev. E. C. Thompson of Occidental, assisted by his brother, Rev. E. E. Thompson, a well known evangelist of San Francisco. The pastor will be the presiding officer and master of ceremonies. Dr. C. O. Perkins will have charge of the music, and in addition to the choir of the local church the following quartet will assist: Mesdames George Hurd and David Gutermute, Dr. C. O. Perkins, Mr. Reynolds. Immediately upon the conclusion of the ceremony thirteen persons will be received into the church in full connection. At present the church list contains twenty-seven names. A large crowd is expected from Petaluma, Santa Rosa and the intervening country. Work was commenced on the church last October, the lot, which is situated on the main road, being one third of a mile north of the station. It was donated by Frank Elpjick. The building was constructed by Sam Rod of this city, while Camm & Hedges fitted the interior. The church was opened December 6th, and since that time has been fully completed, carpeted and furnished, and is entirely free from debt. It cost $1,300 furnished. The church is a tasty structure and has three handsome gothic windows. It will seat 200 persons, and the chapel, which opens into the main auditorium by large doors, will seat 100 more, making a total seating capacity of 300 persons. The interior is finished in natural curly redwood and presents a rich appearance. The walls are tinted, and the interior of the church is completed. The Sabbath school has placed its fine organ in the church and nothing is wanting to finish the beautiful little house of worship which tomorrow will be consecrated. [ Back ] |
